During the Internet boom, sudden & monumental success afforded some entrepreneurs the opportunity to fund grand visions of their own. At the end of 1999 Josh Harris, founder of JupiterResearch and Pseudo.com, indulged his vision by creating an art project called “Quiet.” He gathered over 100 people in a closed environment where cameras were pointed at them in every corner of the space, every hour of the day.
The party/art project/social experiment was captured in last year’s fascinating documentary “We Live in Public,” which was released just as the discussion of privacy and oversharing in social media was on the rise. Now, as we try to understand how to balance social behavior and privacy, we can learn more than ever from revisiting Josh Harris and his webcast experiments.
